Safer Internet Day 2024 was last month, and this year’s themes included, “Inspiring Change, Making a Difference, Managing Influence, and Navigating Change Online,” encourages us to reflect on the impact of the Internet, especially on young people.
We spoke with our IT team here at Skills and Education Group to get some useful pointers to support your learners and staff.
Key themes to work with your students / young people
Young People’s Perspectives on Technology: Young minds often lead the way in embracing new technologies. Safer Internet Day 2024 invites us to understand and respect their perspectives on emerging tech, fostering a safe space for exploration and learning.
Using the Internet for Positive Change: The Internet can be a powerful tool for positive change. The focus is on encouraging users to engage constructively, promoting a digital space where respect and understanding thrive.
Changes Young People Want to See Online: Engage in conversations about the changes young people desire in the online world. Their insights can guide us in creating a safer and more inclusive digital environment.
Influences on Thoughts, Feelings, and Actions: Examine the factors that influence the way young people think, feel, and act online and offline. Identifying these influences is crucial for promoting responsible online behaviour.
Impact of social media:
Social media plays a dual role in impacting our emotions. Evaluate its influence on your well-being, and if negative, consider curating your online presence for a healthier digital experience.
Deep Fake, Fake News, and Disinformation:
Deep Fake Awareness: Recognize the potential harm of deep fake videos. Learn to identify signs such as unrealistic lighting and expressions to distinguish genuine content.
Combatting Fake News and Disinformation: Understand the dangers of fake news and disinformation. Embrace fact-checking as a habit to combat the spread of false information.
We have put together some questions to support you in encouraging a conversation about how students can be safer on the internet in both educational and personal settings of their lives.
Reflection Questions:
What would you do to provide a more positive impact on young people’s experience of social media?
Consider: Advertising, time limits, false information, etc
Could you spot a Deep Fake Video?
Consider: Would that celebrity really say that? Does the lighting make the image look unrealistic (shadows, etc.)?
What different technology do you use? What does it have access to? Does it have a positive impact on you in any way?
Consider: on-board computers in cars, and wearable tech (watches, rings, etc.). Can it access your contacts, photos, etc.?
Are personalised adverts positive or negative to the consumer?
Consider: what information is collated about you to personalise the ads, do personalised ads convince you in any way?
Safer Internet awareness encourages us to be proactive in working in a secure online environment. By contemplating these key themes and daily reflection questions, we can collectively contribute to a safer, more positive digital space for everyone.
