These qualifications are designed for school/college learners who are looking to start a career in engineering and specialisation in Fabrication and Welding and adult learning wishing to upskill. They are not designed to test already competent welders and as such requirements such as welds being subject to mechanical testing which is a condition of welding approval certificates such as ASME 9 or EN 287 EN 9606 are not built into these qualifications. Not only would these be beyond the scope of the typical learner but it also highly unlikely schools/colleges would have the equipment available that include tensile machines, charpy impact testers and hardness machines, all of which require calibration at regular intervals, costing a great deal of money.
