Lead adult care workers provide hands-on, person-centred care and support while also taking responsibility for frontline leadership and supervision.
They work in a range of adult social care settings, including residential and nursing homes, domiciliary care, supported living services, rehabilitation and reablement services, hospices and community-based services.
The role combines direct care with leadership responsibilities. Lead adult care workers may supervise and support colleagues, coordinate day-to-day care, role model good practice and help ensure that care is delivered safely and to the required standard.
They support adults with a range of care and support needs to maintain their independence, dignity, wellbeing, choice and control.
Gateway to Completion Requirements
To complete the apprenticeship, apprentices will be required to:
• successfully complete the apprenticeship assessments below,
• achieve the mandatory Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care approved by Skills for Care from 1 April 2026
• meet the English and mathematics requirements that apply under the current apprenticeship funding rules,
• have confirmation from their employer, in consultation with the training provider, that they have achieved the required occupational knowledge and skills,
• have confirmation from their employer that they have consistently demonstrated the behaviours set out in the occupational standard, and
• meet all other completion requirements set out in the apprenticeship standard and assessment plan.
Details of any additional apprenticeship assessment requirements are still being developed and will be published when confirmed.
The Assessment
The apprenticeship will include two assessment methods:
• Professional discussion
• A second assessment method, which is still being determined
The professional discussion will enable the apprentice to demonstrate their occupational knowledge, skills and experience through a structured discussion with an assessor.
SEG Awards is currently developing the detailed assessment arrangements for this standard. Further information about the professional discussion, the second assessment method, assessment requirements, timings and grading arrangements will be published once confirmed.
