20 July 2023
With concerns around the climate crisis continuing to grow, sustainability is high on the national agenda. The government’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution aims to support up to 250,000 green jobs. As such, knowledge of sustainability is increasingly important for those in education.
With this in mind, Skills and Education Group Awards has developed a new sustainability qualification.
The Level 1 Award in Sustainability Principles and Project Delivery opened for registrations on 1 July 2023 and is available for delivery. The qualification has been developed with specialists to raise awareness of sustainability and how it can sit within all aspects of our lives.
Read on for everything you need to know about the new qualification.
What is the purpose of the qualification?
The qualification aims to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of sustainability along with the practical skills to undertake a sustainability project, which can be linked to any chosen area of study. Examples of areas of study could include environmental, hospitality, or fashion and textiles.
Learners will have the chance to take responsibility for small sustainability goals within an area of particular interest to them, undertaking a project and choosing the most appropriate methods to report their findings.
I have really enjoyed working on a qualification that has the power to show learners how we can all have an impact on sustainability, even if it is only by doing something small.
Who is the qualification for?
This qualification is designed for learners who are aged 14 and above. There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification.
The nature of this qualification means that it can:
- act as a bolt-on for many subjects that a learner is currently undertaking.
- form part of an extended study programme.
- be a standalone subject.
What does it cover?
The qualification covers the following two topics:
- Unit One – Sustainability Principles – This unit enables learners to identify the basic principles of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) and to understand the key features of a sustainability project.
- Unit 2 – Sustainability Project – This unit enables learners to plan a project promoting sustainability linked to a subject area of choice. They will be able to follow an action plan, present results and review the outcomes.
How can learners progress?
Completion of this qualification could provide a progression route alongside other nationally recognised general and vocational qualifications.
